Sound bites

 from past sermons…

“ Each of us is a miracle of beauty, a masterpiece of design, and no one design is ever repeated. Are we also irregular? Of course! All kinds of irregularities — physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, you name it. We are irregular human beings but still miracles of beauty, shaped in utter uniqueness by a loving and creative Creator.”

“If we begin from the heart, sometimes we even refer to our “heart of hearts” for emphasis, then everything else become secondary and we are only judged by the nature of our heart. And if we lead with a heart of gratitude, it colors whatever our chosen path; it warms the people we come in touch with; it keeps us on a more positive note in this world that is so full of the negative.”

“Haggai spoke to his people about 500 years BC and was trying to help them grow in their faith and trust that God cares no matter what our struggles are in how we think God works. We are living through changes of our own but the message of trust in God is the same. God’s picture of the world is so far up ahead that we live in hope because we can’t yet see it.”

“a person’s identity doesn’t come from outward symbols or from the company we keep or from what is worn or said. It doesn’t even come from the country of our birth or where we live right now. Our identity, says Paul, comes from the God who created us.”

“Learned optimism” is the attitude that failures and negative experiences are just flukes or, at best, just one-time occurrences. They’re externally caused, not brought on ourselves. Irregular, not permanent. Specific to one situation, not generalizable to successin other experiences or endeavors. …………  We don’t need to learn helplessness from our pain, and we don’t need to resort to a positives-only picture of life with God. We can learn optimism by trusting God, taking every thought captive and choosing hope.

“When you are stuck in anything you do not want to be stuck in, the way out is to throw your energy into helping someone else.”

“You are all well aware that in my tenure here at this church I have never chased anyone about coming to church. When it comes to one’s faith, that has to come from within because these are choices that we make.”

“Whether we like to think about this life with “signs” from God or not, that’s an individual thing; but it is sad, in my view, if a person thinks that our individual lives have nothing to do with the ongoing creation of the universe. We are living that ongoing creation and the “birth” of new life is our “sign” of God’s continuing creation.”
